The role of higher education in sustainability / sustainable development

As long as sustainability is concerned, higher education is the key to its universal implementation. Sustainability is crucial for every modern welfare state, and not only but it is also of vital importance for the entire world since it deals with global issues such as climate change. This article discovers the sustainability development goals and why they are connected to the higher education sphere, and how to apply them in universities and colleges.

First of all, sustainable development has several goals that go from mental wellbeing to the general improvement of all parts and participants. The latter meet several issues that vary from the topics connected to the environment to the ones that have to do with work, health, or gender equality. For instance, the environmental issues have two goals, raising awareness on climate change and responsible consumption and production requiring harmony with nature. Work and economic growth are about the reduction of youth unemployment. While health, wellbeing, and gender equality both foresee global access to the sexual and reproductive healthcare system and information on the latter two. Moreover, ACS ASOMI College of Sciences is concerned with sustainability and is looking forward to inserting new programs regarding sustainable development, especially because sustainability is strictly connected to higher education.

To obtain these sustainable development goals, we should turn our attention to higher education institutes, for they are the ones who can bring about a change in helping sustainability. Global problems are addressed best by applying universal education. As the world becomes independent, higher education is one of the providers of knowledge and the bearer of change. Education for sustainable development is not only about green areas or recycling in campuses, universities, or colleges. It is about universities and colleges organizing partnerships and cooperating worldwide. Besides, more and more students are convinced that higher education is important to obtain sustainable development goals. Besides, the learners would maybe even be more willing to obtain a degree if they had a chance to enrol in study programs related to higher sustainability. As the provider of knowledge, higher education should play a crucial role in solving the issues connected to sustainability to achieve sustainable development goals.

Thus, education of all levels and all types should help all citizens partaking in the current society in thinking and behaving in the right way towards a more sustainable planet. In fact, more and more teaching programs and courses in universities and colleges are designed for causes supporting sustainable development. Learning targets, suggestions, approaches, subjects, and activities should be aimed at and redesigned based on each sustainable development goal. No matter the discipline, education must be reinvented, and the aim of the educational system should be to help people conduct a more sustainable lifestyle. Higher education should thus supply students with skills for a sustainable future such as critical thinking on recycling, global warming or even citizenship. Moreover, disciplinary boundaries might result in something dividing these disciplines; these borders should be knocked down to achieve sustainable development for all disciplines. Higher education has a crucial role in developing programs and revolutionizing their entire institution to make radical changes today favouring sustainability.

Colleges and universities have a crucial role in developing sustainability and helping the entire world by doing it. As official providers of knowledge, higher education institutes have the task of equipping students with all necessary for developing a highly sustained society.
