Six reasons why higher education institutions should recycle

By Asomi College of Sciences

Finally, the climate crisis has become one of the most important topics worldwide. However, we can reduce the effects of emissions and pollution by working together. Everyone needs to play a role in minimising the footprint we leave on our planet, and so do universities and colleges.

Global problem.

Climate crisis, accumulation of waste and pollution is not just a problem for a single nation, region, town or city, but it’s a global problem.

The waste already has devastating effects on the environment, which means that we have to fight to preserve the planet and therefore fight global warming through recycling and other green actions.

Recycling.

Recycling reduces carbon emissions. Greenhouse gases or carbon emissions are produced when waste is combusted. Bed recycling helps to reduce the amount of garbage being combusted. In other words, recycling lowers carbon emissions.

Natural resources.

Plants are the most important natural resources, but they are limited. More and more plants and forests are taken down for establishing fields for crops or building structures.

That leads to deforestation. Besides, it takes a lot of time to grow a plant. However, plants are the most critical natural resource, so we must help prevent their reduction. Recycling saves up trees and water to avoid the deduction of plants.

Energy.

Recycling saves up energy. When companies prepare their products from raw materials, they consume more energy, which is usually non-renewable.

Thus, the factories that use recycled aluminium save up much power compared to their competitors that use raw materials. That means that recycled materials require less energy and water and therefore have a minor effect on pollution.

Air pollution.

Recycling reduces the reliance on incinerators and landfills. Consequently, it also reduces the toxins produced by factories. The waste from the land fields decomposes and causes a stench smell. Paper recycling lessens the number of trees being cut.

The trees absorb carbon dioxide, so recycling reduces the greenhouse effect.

Landfills.

Recycling minimises the need to build new landfills. The waste disposal is growing, and landfills are overflown. Besides, our seas and oceans are full of waste, and the waters are polluted.

Every time you recycle a piece of trash, the need for new landfills reduces.

HEI property value

Your higher education institution is more likely to have a higher property value if the requirement for landfills is lessened. Maybe there is not a landfill near your institution or your campus right now, but as the demand for landfills is constantly growing, it is something that might happen.

If we are going to participate in environmentally friendly activities and if we don’t recycle, then they might also build an incinerator near your campus. So recycling reduces to chances for these events to happen.

Why universities and colleges should recycle.

Higher education institutions are the most honourable institutions worldwide. These are where the mines from tomorrow come from, and the geniuses are being taught. Therefore, you have to be an excellent example to your students and staff.

Consequently, many students are willing to come to your university or college if you recycle because you are a good example not only for them, as  single human beings but for the entire society. Of course, nowadays, a lot of greenwashing is going on.

Still, showing that you care and recycle will be but a plus for your reputation as a higher education institution.

ACS – ASOMI College of Sciences supports international and climate -friendly activities. We keep our eye on other types of green actions. We believe that ethical behaviour, to inclusion from nature, is what every higher education institution should promote. If you want to read more articles on environmental topics, click here.
