Global trends in higher education in 2022

By Asomi College of Sciences

Today education has to keep up with the powerful shifts and technological advances of the current times. Everything is changing rapidly, and education has to keep up for guaranteeing the most efficient delivery to ensure that today’s students will match the high requirements of tomorrow’s labour market.

After Covid-19, education has become faster in its delivery and more job-oriented. Besides, the Coronavirus pandemic has shaped the educational panorama even more. Since the pandemics began, an incredible number of formative institutions, courses, and tutorials have been born. But how to face the educational challenges created by constant changes and the post-Covid period by following the current education trends?

Self-learning

Self-learning has become an essential standpoint for the educational community mainly because it is better to manage time and location. It is also closer to what labour markets require. So, when it comes to self-learning online, students find it easier to follow courses that are delivered on the internet. They win in terms of time and costs: everyday scheduling gets less stressful, and the prices are lower since the students do not have to commute or pay for their living expenses in a different place. Moreover, extra advantages include the fact of being more work-related. Since the traditional academic courses tend to be often not quite work-related and often overly theoretical, the learners nowadays prefer job-oriented classes.

That situation, however, has triggered the growth of low-quality educational institutions, courses, and tutorials. The fact is that learners often find it difficult to know how to pick the right path. But actually, it is easier than it seems: the courses and the institution offering them have to be accredited. Accreditation of an institution means that external educational organizations act as auditors evaluating and acknowledging the efficiency, reliability and delivery methods of offered courses. If they are not accredited, there are high possibilities that these courses have low quality.

The number of remote and online learning is growing as well. As remote learning and smart working already entered our vocabulary before the pandemics even started, the latter just accelerated what would’ve otherwise still happened. While the pandemics just continued what was already happening regarding that phenomenon, of course, since the internet offers millions of opportunities, so do thousands of institutions that provide lessons that may not always be liable.

Tailored learning

Studying models have to be personalized and efficient. That, indeed, is yet another uprising trend in the educational panorama. The method of applying everything to everybody does not function anymore. The competitiveness is too high in the current world, and the digital and technological revolution accelerates the shift in the automation of jobs and the creation of new ones. So basically, if the courses are not tailored according to the student’s needs, the chances that they’ll find a job after graduation will be lower. Besides, the Covid19 pandemics taught people to think more about themselves and listen to their inner selves. That does not necessarily mean leaving their full-time 9-to-5 jobs but just reflecting on how things are. That way of thinking significantly affects the younger generations, meaning that if you do the work you love, you’re more likely to enjoy what you are doing. Besides, suppose a learner is specifically talented in something. In that case, it is better to cultivate that talent, which means that if people work on their talent, they will do what they love and are more likely to be successful because their motivation is higher.

Liking the education to the labour market

While tailoring education on learners’ individual needs, it is essential to tailor it to the market’s demands, especially in higher education. As already said, the labour market is constantly changing, and new job positions and requirements are emerging. Education needs a fresh flow of unique, labour and practice-oriented courses. This discourse goes especially for the higher education panorama. Of course, academic background and solid basis are still necessary, so it is not only a matter of the practical side of the course. But it does not only have to be theoretical otherwise but there is also a high risk that the graduates will remain jobless.
